EMC/E3 analysis of rotorcraft electrical system exposed to antenna radiation and incident EMP
The first webcast in the series discusses the application of full wave modeling to predicting EMC/E3 performance in a rotorcraft. We start by investigating the coupling from a blade installed on the fuselage to internal cable systems. CST CABLE STUDIO is used to efficiently and accurately model the bi-directional interaction between electromagnetic fields and the complex cable system. True transient co-simulation enables direct time-domain analysis of voltages and currents induced in cable systems, due to an incident EMP. Finally, non-linear components are added to the model to assess the performance of transient protection devices (TPD’s).

Optimization of a Reflector Antenna System
The optimization of high gain reflector antennas presents a real challenge for conventional simulation tools. The range of geometric sizes and physical operating principles means that significant improvements in simulation time can be obtained by the clever combination of different numerical techniques. This webinar will describe how the new smart assembly mode simulation system in CST STUDIO SUITE 2011 enables the engineer to model complex reflector antenna and feed systems efficiently and accurately.

EDA workflow using CST MICROWAVE STUDIO - from Layout to Eye Diagram
This webinar will present 3D EM Signal Integrity simulation using CST MICROWAVE STUDIO. It will demonstrate the PCB layout import and the 3D full wave simulation of a realistic multilayer PCB. Standard outputs like S-Parameters, Time Domain Reflection (TDR) and Mode Conversion will be shown along with eye diagram and field distribution. A comparative analysis between time and frequency domain solver will be also presented and trade-offs will be discussed.

Modeling the susceptibility of enclosures to ESD and the effect of attaching cables
The second webcast in the series discusses recent advances in modeling ESD generators using CST STUDIO. Direct transient analysis is used to simulate the ESD test waveforms defined by the IEC 61000-4-2 standard. We demonstrate the importance of modeling the physical geometry of the generator, including the ground strap. We simulate a direct contact discharge to an enclosure and predict the resulting current paths and radiated electromagnetic fields. Finally, we investigate the effect of attaching cables to the enclosure.

Simplifying the Workflow - benefits of the CST and Cadence Partnership
Cadence and CST offer very effective solutions for high speed PCB/package co-design. Two different workflows will be presented: 1) the “EDA centric” approach that allows the full wave simulation to be run as a fully background process with back annotation of the results to the layout environment and 2) the “EM centric approach” that focuses on the full wave environment. The benefits of such level of integration in the daily work of design engineers will be discussed.

Simulation: Enabling In-flight Connectivity
Mobile phone and wi-fi communication while travelling by air is now being offered by several airlines and will become standard in future. Ensuring a reliable link depends on having properly designed antennas for the in-aircraft picocell base-stations and for the satellite or ground links outside the aircraft. Simulation is key for the optimal design of these antennas, and the selection of methods built in to CST STUDIO SUITE 2011 allows the engineer to use the best tool for each stage of the link.

Faster Design Cycles with High Performance Hardware
In times of growing product complexity and shorter development cycles simulations are an essential part of a development process. These help the engineer to analyze a large number of variants of a design within a short time without building up prototypes for each design alternative. The computational time needed to complete a simulation with a certain accuracy level is a critical measure, which in the end decides the feasibility of the simulation. Much can be done to reduce the computational time, such as choosing an appropriate solver and solver settings which are well suited to the problem under study. However, many simulation tasks still require such a large amount of computational resources, e.g. because of extensive parameter studies, a high model complexity, or simply a large number of mesh cells needed for the discretization, that it is impractical or even impossible to handle them using a standard workstation computer. High Performance Computing (HPC) techniques help to bring down the computational time of such simulations or make the handling of complex models possible. This webinar gives an overview of the hardware based acceleration techniques offered by CST STUDIO SUITE. The supported systems range from single off-the-shelf workstations to high-end cluster based solutions. Typical application examples are discussed as well as the integration of CST STUDIO SUITE in HPC cluster systems.

New simulation workflows for predicting radiated emissions from electronics systems
The final webcast in the series will discuss powerful new workflows for reliably predicting radiated emissions from electronics systems. We start by importing a complex PCB model into CST PCB STUDIO and applying new EMC rules checking algorithms to rapidly identify potential weaknesses in the design. Critical nets, planes and vias are then analyzed to determine the differential mode (DM) to common mode (CM) conversion caused by driver skew and line imbalance. Finally, the resulting transient noise waveforms are injected into a 3D model of the connector/cable assembly and radiated emissions predicted. Important features of a typical anechoic chamber test are represented in the model using external ground plane reflections and cylindrical scanning to detect the peak emissions.

PCB and package co/design and co/optimization
The drive for higher performance leads to increasing complexity and miniaturization of electronic circuit on-chip, more functionality on package level and high density PCB boards. PCB/Package designers are therefore taking the electrical environment via Co-Design and Co-Optimization into account. This webinar addresses the challenges in modeling and simulation for PCB package Co-Design and Co-Optimization.

Reconfigurable Antenna Simulation
Packing more functionality into ever smaller spaces has made reconfigurable antennas very attractive for telecommunications engineers, especially given the ever expanding landscape of cellular network standards. As with any other antenna application, virtual prototyping is extremely important for accelerating the product design cycle and reducing time to market. This webinar will introduce the concepts involved in making antennas reconfigurable – for example tunable materials, mechanical reconfigurability, and RF MEMS and PIN diode switches – and will address how these can be simulated efficiently using the advanced tools in CST STUDIO SUITE 2011.

Electromagnetic simulation in radar system design
This webcast will discuss the application of CST STUDIO Suite to a full radar system design. CST’s complete simulation technology enables the most appropriate method/solver to be applied to the diverse range of components typically found in a radar system. For the digital design, combined PCB/package analysis is necessary to achieve adequate signal integrity and minimize interference/emissions. CST’s transient solver is ideal for capturing the broadband performance of the PCB/package. On the RF/MW feed system side, different field solvers are put to work for designing and optimizing the various components, including FIT, FEM and MoM. For the antenna element design, unit cell analysis is first applied to simulate an infinite array. After optimizing at this level, the full (finite) array is simulated using high performance computing techniques enabling the influence of edge element effects and mutual couplings to be understood. Finally, coupling of the antenna back into the feeding cable and electronics can be taken into account using CST CABLE STUDIO’s hybrid 3D field / 2D cable solver technique.
